ANKLE PAIN/CONDITIONS
When was the last time you actually thought about your ankles?
While ankle pain rarely gets as much attention as knee or hip pain, it is incredibly common, with over 40% of the population experiencing it at some point in their lives. If ongoing ankle discomfort or instability is interfering with your day-to-day life, the clinical team at Conquer Allied Health is here to help you rebuild your strength and mobility.

Overcoming Ankle Injuries and Rebuilding Stability For most individuals, ankle pain stems from sprains, tendinitis, or structural fractures. While many of these injuries heal successfully with the right management, they still drastically impair your mobility—particularly when the pain makes it difficult to bear weight or walk comfortably. This discomfort is frequently accompanied by noticeable swelling, bruising, and joint stiffness.
At Conquer Allied Health, our clinicians provide a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to ankle rehabilitation. We look closely at your movement patterns to pinpoint the exact mechanism of your pain, allowing us to build a highly tailored treatment plan around your specific needs. By combining targeted strengthening exercises, progressive mobility drills, and clinical pain management techniques, we ensure you achieve lasting results.
Whether you play competitive sports or simply want to keep up with an active daily routine, ankle instability shouldn't dictate what you can do. Our Physiotherapists and Clinical Exercise Physiologists are dedicated to ensuring your ankle health never holds you back.
COMMON ANKLE CONDITIONS
To effectively treat ankle pain, it’s essential to understand some of its common causes. Here are just a few of the reasons your ankle might be hurting:
Ankle sprains: are one of the most frequent causes of acute ankle pain. This injury occurs when the strong ligaments that support and stabilise the joint are overstretched or torn, usually due to a sudden twisting movement or unexpected impact. Typical symptoms include rapid swelling, bruising, a restricted range of motion, and significant difficulty bearing weight or walking.
Achilles tendinitis: involves irritation and inflammation of the large tendon at the back of the heel. This condition is typically caused by overuse, repetitive strain, or a sudden increase in training load, resulting in localized pain, morning stiffness, and a noticeable reduction in flexibility
Ankle fractures: result in acute discomfort, significant swelling, and a clear inability to bear weight on the affected limb. While many fractures are caused by a sudden impact or trauma, they can also develop gradually from repetitive loading and cumulative stress on the joint, resulting in what is known as a stress fracture.
Various forms of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, can also be major contributors to chronic ankle pain. These conditions cause the gradual degeneration of the joint's protective cartilage, which triggers localized inflammation, persistent stiffness, and structural discomfort during weight-bearing movements.
Posterior tibital tendon dysfunction (PTTD): this condition occurs when the primary tendon responsible for supporting your foot's natural arch becomes strained, weakened, or damaged. This leads to localized pain and swelling along the inside of the foot and ankle, often causing the arch to gradually flatten or collapse. Over time, this structural shift directly alters your gait mechanics and compromises your overall lower-limb stability.
When you visit our Mount Evelyn clinic, our clinical team will thoroughly assess your lower limb to identify whether your ankle pain is driven by one of these specific conditions or an underlying biomechanical issue. Regardless of the root cause, we will partner with you to design a personalised rehabilitation plan focused on restoring your body's balance, strength, and structural flexibility.
